Samsung wants to release a foldable smartphone next year

Samsung wants to lead the world into the future of smartphones by releasing a foldable smartphone as early as next year. According to Bloomberg, Samsung on Tuesday said that it would release it under the Galaxy Note brand. The president of Samsung’s mobile business, Koh Dong-jin, said that there are several hurdles they must resolve. If not resolved it could result into pushing back the release date beyond next year.
“As the head of the business, I can say our current goal is next year,” he told reporters. “When we can overcome some problems for sure, we will launch the product.”
This seems like a natural step for Samsung, since the recently release Samsung Galaxy Note 8 copies the Samsung Galaxy S8 concept of infinity display. The company cannot afford to use the same design for the next year flagships as it has for this year flagships. This is further complicated by the fact that many manufactures are eliminating bezels on their smartphones. This brings up the need for something new to shakeup the market or at least give them an edge over its competitors. Samsung could do that if it were to release a foldable smartphone in the next one to years.
The Samsung Galaxy s9, slated to be released early next year, is not expected to be foldable. In fact, I think if Samsung does manage to release the foldable smartphone next year under Galaxy Note brand, it will be alongside a normal looking Galaxy Note phablet, much like they did with their edge variant in Galaxy S7 and Note 7.

Samsung has been teasing a foldable smartphone for a number of years now, even releasing a concept video of foldable tablet back in 2014. This now seems as a matter of when and not if. The concept of foldable smartphones or tablets is enticing since a small enough device to fit in one pocket could house a large screen, twice the size of foldable smartphone. So, what do you think, are the foldable smartphones the future? Comment with your answer below.
